Natal Police Nongqai Sterling SILVER spoon, South Africa, circa 1908

$130.00

Sterling SILVER with enamel teaspoon for the Natal Police "Nongqai", former Natal Colony, South Africa. Engraved on bottom of spoon: "NATAL POLICE S.S.C" (I do not know what the S.S.C. stands for, maybe for some shooting competition?)

Maker's mark is: W.J.D. (William James Dingley, a well-known Birmingham silversmith)

Assay mark reads:

1. Anchor - for Birmingham
2. Lion passant - for Sterling Silver or England made.
3. Italic "i" - for date, 1908

The Natal Police, previously Natal Mounted Police, existed till 1913 when it got amalgamated in the new Union of South Africa Police.
