South African General Service cap badge in the form of a circle with a central void inscribed in English and Afrikaans 'Union Is Strength' - 'Eendrag Maak Mag'. Within the circle is the head of a Springbok facing left. Also known as “Goat in the Porthole”
The Union Defense Force (UDF) was formed in 1912 in the Union of South Africa, through the amalgamation of the South African colonial forces following the unification of South Africa.
1936 the Dutch writing was changed to Afrikaans and the motto "Eendracht Maakt Macht" became "Eendrag Maak Mag".
In 1957 the UDF was renamed the South African Defense Force (SADF)/Suid-Afrikaanse Weermag (SAW).
Changed to South African National Defense Force (SANDF) in 1994. The South African Army is the principal land warfare force of South Africa, a part of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF).
